Why Do I Need a Smog Check?A Shoulder Bag Bag Leather Handbag Ladies Tote Genuine Black Tibes ARqT88
The State of California, based off the Federal Clean Air Act, requires vehicles to be inspected every two years to meet the state’s regulations. You may also need a smog check if you recently moved from another state or if you recently bought a pre-owned car. Smog checks are part of a larger plan to reduce air pollution and improve the air quality within our state.
What Happens During a Smog Check?
If your car was made prior to 2000, a smog check will consist of a test using the Emissions Inspection System (EIS). The system measures your vehicle's emissions under various conditions. The most common auto pollutants are carbon monoxide (CO), nitrous oxide (NO), and hydrocarbons (HCs). If the test shows any of these chemicals to be outside federal or state guidelines or the car’s sensors are not functioning, the vehicle fails the smog check.
If your car model-year is 2000 or newer, a smog check will consist of a computer-based test to make sure the emission control systems are working properly. This new method uses the On-Board Diagnostic system already built into your car and streamlines the smog check process.
